Los Quentros De infantales, Description, Reflection
Our children's book project consisted of writing, and illustrating a children's book of our own creation.
We began the project by researching various Spanish countries we had each selected. Through the research, we discovered good topics for children's books. In my research, I discovered that in Puntas Arenas Chile ranchers always put llamas and sheep in the same pen. This is because llamas will protect the sheep like their children. As you can see above, this is what I decided to write my story about.
Next, we took these topics and began drafting stories to put in our books. Finally we received our books. then proceeded to write in, and illustrate them.
Some time after the books were complete we exhibited them to the kids at Needham Elementary. The we read our stories, they asked questions, we answered them. My favorite part of the project was seeing their reactions; It was fun, and it was a success.
If I could change something about my finished project I'd try to include much more abut Chilean culture in my story. As I mentioned earlier, the situation I mentiones is mostly specific to Chile, I even explain it. But that explanation wan an afterthought, otherwise I'm not sure how anyone would absorb any culture form the book, which was a large portion of the project. If I actually could re-do it I would attempt to make the discription less tacky by incorporating it within the story itself.

Project explanation, and reflection
El dia de los muertos
El dia de los muertos is a spanish festival that honors the dead by celebrating their lives. In Mexico, the day itself is a national holiday. originally la dia de los muertos was a mixture of culture of native central Americans, and Spanish Catholics. While there is only one "dia" (day) in the description, the festival actually consists of three days. On October 31'st she spirits of children are said to visit the earth. On November 1'st, All Saints Day (the original Catholic holiday) the spirits of adults come down to visit the earth. Finally on the third day, November 2'nd , All Souls Day, families gather to clean and decorate the tombs and gravestones of their families. This can include flowers, candles, paths, as well as things the dead enjoyed in life, such as coffee, or a favorite meal.
Reflection
Reflecting on my actual project, I was not particularly satisfied with the results. I created a poema calevera, as well as a "calaca" in the image of my grandpa Bob. The figurine itself is not my best work, and recalling it, I believe if done properly it would've done his memory justice. However, my inexperience, the statue looked more like a see-saw than an actual person. This was one of the reasons I do not have it today. Normally, the calaca is meant to represent a skeleton of a person, doing what they enjoyed in life. Since I have no photo, nor the figurine itself here is an example of what a calaca can look like, given time and practice:
While I believe my calaca was sub-par, I'm actually satisfied with my poema calevara. These poems, much like the calacas are meant to express a person's life; only through words rather than form. My poema talks about what my grandpa enjoyed in life, and even with my limited vocabulary, I happy with how it turned out. You can see it for yourself here:
